Moscow 'condones' online scams that target the UK's elderly, Ben Wallace has claimed

The UK is facing certain forms of "unconventional warfare" waged by its enemies, potentially including Moscow-backed online scams that target the elderly, former British Secretary of Defence Ben Wallace has claimed.

The Conservative MP, who resigned from the cabinet last August, told Sky News on Wednesday that the world today reminded him of the interwar periods during the last century.

The situation, Wallace explained, is similar to "the 1930s, but with an added challenge of terrorism and a challenge of unconventional warfare." As examples of the latter, he cited "disinformation campaigns, the enemies in this country using cyber to divide us, to rob from us, to spy on us, and to create frictions in our society."

When asked by host Kay Burley which nation posed the biggest threat to the UK, Wallace said it was Russia.

Comment: It's a little rich for Wallace to blame Russia for the state of the UK, considering how the UK's misrule by plonkers like him have been at the forefront in destroying that society.

"Many of the big cyber-crime syndicates are based in Russia, curiously protected by the Russian state," he claimed. "They are the ones robbing your granny and my parents with phishing emails. So, Russia is directly challenging us at all levels."

Comment: There is likely state-backed coordination of many if not most of such scams, but it's not Russian. From Europol in February 2023:

Earlier this month, British police reported busting a UK-founded international ring of scammers, which since 2021 alone has stolen from some 70,000 victims in the country. Thirty-seven people were arrested around the world in the LabHost case, the force reported. The statement didn't mention Russia.

Comment: When all else fails, pull out 'the granny argument', just like with Covid when the rationale of 'saving granny' justified draconian laws. In reality, Wallace and his colleagues killed off thousands of grannies by withholding proper healthcare and then pushing jabs they profited from.

So Wallace, who has found his purpose in life - pushing for war with Russia - is blowing more smoke here, apparently as part of a drive to put the UK into 'war economy mode', which basically amounts to another raft of draconian anti-freedom laws.

Because, as you say, the truth stands on its own merits. Why the need to keep pounding it home. Neither side is going to say: "You're right, I'll concede the fight." I don't know much detail about the topic that you're discussing, but if you've said the truth then that for me is game over: for me, it's time to step away, let the other have the loser's temper tantrum, and let the seeds of truth settle to see if they have landed on fertile ground. If you keep hitting again and again, for me it raises doubts that your point was valid.

There is the case of the rich boy who had his ice cream knocked out of his hand: unable to identify the culprit, in order to exert "justice", he had his rich parents burn the whole village to the ground. Sometimes we do greater injustices when we try to fight a small injustice.

I don't know much about these regiments that you guys are speaking, but there is one thing I do know: they're dead, it's in the past, and we living here and now are not responsible for what caused that injustice.

I live in a very racist country (both the government and its people), and I would not survive a day if I was to feel guilty for what the Europeans did centuries ago: I wasn't even born, I didn't steal any gold, I didn't sell any slaves, I was born into an honest working class family where uncles were sent off as cannon-fodder to fight for wars that rich people started. How true. Well..., in my case anyway. That got me to think why. Maybe with less time left I don't want to waste time arguing what comes down to meaningless things. Pointless to try and change a made up mind I guess, including mine. I don't know but what I do know is that this question will be somewhere in the background of my mind for a bit searching for an answer.

Demore I had the experience of moving abroad, making a whole new circle of friends, only to lose a great load of them at once due to the whole phenomena of "being older = less friends". The older we get, the more petrified we become, the less flexible we are. I remember someone saying that most friendships are based on the compatibility of our needs to complain: when we complain about similar subjects, we remain friends... But the moment we start complaining about different things, or what you complain about is not what I want to complain about, then the social contract ends. When we're young we have the same complaints: parents, school, girls/boys, hence we have a lot of friends... The older we get, the more particular we are, the less affinity we have in our complaints. Hence, the whiny old farts who complain about nonsense about which no one else gives a stuff.

More important than friends, is friendliness. A friendship based in affinity of likes is greater than one based in dislikes.

I observe this with myself, too. While I get along well with all my direct workmates and direct superior, I would want almost none of them as friends. The same goes for club mates at my archery club ...

Friends are friends based on mutual likes, and dislikes! Knowing and trusting them with your nearest and dearest. Many consider acquaintances friends, these are people, have never made friends. So as they go through life, they base everything on their, ken!

This is a discussion group, there are likes and dislikes, of posters, but how on earth can you be friends of posters, when you cannot ascertain, the character or integrity of an individual? We see in posts daily contradictions, posters using limited information and making emotional decisions based on limited education and limited facts, covered over with government largess and media lies. I have no doubt I too can be mistaken, but at least I try first to remove my emotions of the subject to look at the facts!

Many here cannot believe there government is lying to them, like the farmer taking sheep to the slaughter house, they the sheep, walk quietly forwards! Taking umbrage at anyone exposing this fact, helps only the sheep, keeping the sheep quiet!
