A pack of killer whales sank a 50-foot yacht in Moroccan waters Sunday when the massive sea mammals slammed into the vessel and forced two sailors aboard to flee, officials said.

Spanish authorities said the crew members were rescued by a passing oil tanker that was alerted to the desperate situation after the boat sprang a leak during the orca encounter in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The two people were customers, and the vessel belonged to Spanish company Alboran Charter, according to the Washington Post.

The yacht, which was 14 miles from the Cape Spartel coast, later sunk to the bottom of the ocean in the latest orca attack that has prompted experts to warn other sailors of danger in the area.

Last October, a Polish tour agency's yacht was relentlessly hit by a herd of orcas for 45 minutes that led to "major damage and leakage," the agency said. The boat ended up sinking.

Open the trunk.
Thailand faces an alarming increase in wild elephant attacks, resulting in at least 150 deaths and over 133 injuries since 2018, according to a report by the country's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Many victims have been tourists in southern Thailand.

The Humane Society attributes these attacks to tourists provoking the elephants.

The report reveals these massive animals have been venturing into populated areas, causing havoc on roads and even entering homes, making Thailand a global hotspot for elephant-related incidents.

In a notable event, a herd of 50 elephants crossing a highway in Chachoengsao halted traffic.

However, the situation escalated when a seven-ton bull elephant named Duea sat in a motorist's car in Khao Yai National Park.

It's written in the stars - Assyriologist solves archaeological mystery from 700 BC in Iraq

Ancient symbols on a 2,700-year-old temple which have baffled experts for over a century have been explained by Trinity Assyriologist Dr Martin Worthington.

The sequence of 'mystery symbols' were on view on temples at various locations in ancient city of Dūr-Šarrukīn, present day Khorsabad, Iraq, which was ruled by Sargon II, king of Assyria (721-704 BC).

Assyrian Eagle and Bull

The sequence of five symbols - a lion, eagle, bull, fig-tree and plough - were first made known to the modern world through drawings published by French excavators in the late nineteenth century. Since then, there has been a spate of ideas about what the symbols might mean.

They have been compared to Egyptian hieroglyphs, understood as reflections of imperial might, and suspected to represent the king's name - but how?

Dr Martin Worthington of Trinity's School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies has proposed a new solution in a paper published this month [April 26th] in the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research. He argues the Assyrian words for the five symbols (lion, eagle, bull, fig-tree and plough) contain, in the right sequence, the sounds that spell out the Assyrian form of the name 'Sargon' (šargīnu).

Sometimes, the same archaeological site uses only three of the symbols (lion, tree, plough), which Dr Worthington argues again write the name 'Sargon', following similar principles.

The MERR Institute said the mammal is a "fin whale," which is the second-largest whale species on earth, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The mammal is about 50 feet long, the MERR Institute said.

According to the MERR Institute, the whale was "extremely emaciated," which means it was suffering from a "long-term underlying condition."

Fin whales are an off-shore species, according to the MERR Institute, and "would not normally come near shore unless they are becoming so weak that they can no longer surface to breathe."
