Question

Mystery of 'The Earthquake Boom'- a real earthquake

One June 11, 2003 the first volcanism article, Volcanoes In California, Idaho, and Pacific Northwest Building Towards Catastrophic Eruptions, reveals a startling discovery to science –the '‘earthquake boom' (see list item 11 of History of ‘'Breakthrough' Technology).

Currently a mystery to seismologists, a powerful explosion sound which eludes detection by the best of seismographs, is a real earth event and should be correctly classified as an ‘'earthquake'. The rare earthquake boom is part of a ‘'family' of five types of events the earth can generate of which only two are known by science. It is important for residents near volcanoes to be aware of the ‘'earthquake boom', although an unnerving experience doesn't indicate an actual explosion occurred or that an eruption is imminent. This article gives insight into why these events occur and what they mean. Included are some hair raising stories from Mt. St. Helens climbers – who experienced a fantastic '‘boom'.

Comment: Signs of the Times is often entertained by the newsletters of "Shorcha Faal," which are prolific and well-put together. In fact, if a person wasn't careful to check the sources, they might be taken in by them.

And that's not to say that there aren't a lot of reliable stories included.

The problem is: they are generally "linked" together by a very shakey lynchpin which, when discovered, makes one very suspicious of everything else.

The above linked article is a case in point. It is the lynchpin for the recent SF newsletter about all the mysterious "booms" going on in the U.S. which are supposed to be indicators of the imminent fracturing of the North American Plate. And certainly, taken together with the dam that has just collapsed in Missouri, and the gas geysers in Oklahoma, things are looking a bit suspicious. (Not to mention the lack of activity on the Western Rim of the Ring of Fire vs. all the activity on the Western Rim.)

"Sorcha Faal" refers to the author of the above linked article as "the United States Terra Research Institute in their report titled “Mystery of 'The Earthquake Boom'.

What's wrong with that? Sounds like a legitimate government agency with real science going on and the voice of a real expert, right?

Well, if you do a bit of a websearch, you will find this interesting tidbit:
Thousands Flee After India Passes Along Sham Warning

Misinformation and chaos filled disaster's breach last week as thousands fled coastal areas of India and Sri Lanka after the Indian government put out a public warning that another earthquake, and subsequent tsunami, was imminent. The basis for the alarm: Readings supposedly taken by a contraption housed in the back of a pickup truck in Oregon. The warning was originally posted to the Web site of Terra Research and Consulting Services. The business's owner, Larry Park, claims to be a computer expert and earthquake forecaster, based on a new type of electromagnetic radiation he's discovered. He has no formal training in geology, and his theories have not been peer-reviewed.

So why did the Indian government act? Indian Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal explained that the U.S. office of the Indian Space Research Organization saw the prediction posted on Park's Web site, contacted Park, and then passed along the dire warning to the government in New Dehli. In retrospect, Sibal called Park's conclusion "unscientific hogwash," but it was the S&T Ministry that passed the warning along to the Home Ministry, which issued the warning. Sibal said he wasn't consulted before that alarm was sounded.

Park has a different version of events. He says he alerted filmmaker Mike McNulty, who passed the warning along to the U.S. embassies of India, Indonesia and Australia. On Dec. 30, McNulty, nominated for an Oscar for his 1998 documentary film "Waco: The Rules of Engagement" about the FBI siege of the Branch Davidians compound, told the AP "the forecast is January 1- —it isn't game over yet."

The deadline passed, of course— - so "game over" for Park's prediction. "There are lots of these charlatans out there, and the more publicity they get the more money they make," Steve Malone of the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network at the University of Washington told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "There is no way to predict earthquakes ahead of time yet that's proven."
So everything is NOT as Sorcha Faal presents it. And we have caught him/her at it dozens of times. Why, if a person is trying to propagate truth, do they have to fudge their sources? There's no reason to make Larry Park appear to be a gov. scientist. But apparently, Sorcha realizes that most people will NOT click the links, or if they do, they will not then try to verify who is who and what their agenda might be.

And we aren't even saying that there is any nefarious agenda to Mr. Park. But there sure does seem to be a nefarious agenda behind Sorcha Faal.

Nevertheless, we are still left with those interesting "mystery booms" and collapsing dams, gushing gas geysers, and a whole host of fun things going on here on the Big Blue Marble that Sorcha rightly points out as being significant. Click the expandy thinger to read some of them, and let's leave it open for now. For all we know, Larry Park is right. But we strongly urge caution when reading Sorcha Faal - he/she "prestidigitates" information rather often, and we wonder why?

Mysterious Kingfisher-area gas geysers leave officials puzzled

Kingfisher, Oklahoma -- Mysterious unrefined natural gas leaks erupting in rural Kingfisher County in recent days continue to have officials puzzled as to their cause.

"We originally thought a pipeline had exploded," said Matt Skinner, Oklahoma Corporation Commission public information manager. "We had the pressure to zero pressure, and the leaks seemed to get bigger. So that's not it."

Skinner had said at a press conference Monday geologists and hydrologists are beginning to study underground maps of the area to find an explanation.

"We've ruled out the probables, and now we're into the unprobables," he said. "We've never seen one like this before, one that covers such a large area. It's another animal."

Skinner said the leak was unusual because of its size and that it was "moving with no explanation."

Comment: Now, isn't that interesting? It reminds us of the "Dante's Peak". In the flick, there were little clues here and there that something big was going on underground... areas of ground heating, hot water, a few slight, shakey little quakes that might do things such as cause a dam to collapse...

Are these "experts" forgetting about the Ouachita Frontal Fault Zone?

Nothing to worry about here, folks!

Earthquake felt in New Delhi, second in two days

New Delhi - A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook northern India on Wednesday, a day after residents of New Delhi and other areas in the north were shaken by a 6.7 quake centered in the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan.

The Meteorological Department said the epicenter was in the Chamoli district of Uttaranchal. There were no initial reports of damage or casualties, an official said.

Scores of houses were damaged in Afghanistan by Tuesday's early morning earthquake, the biggest since the devastating Oct. 8 South Asia quake that killed almost 75,000 in the region.

Afghanistan hit by quake

A major earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre in the Hindukush mountains of Afghanistan was felt in India and Pakistan early this morning but there were no immediate reports of casualty or damage.

The temblor, which occurred at 0317 IST, was also felt in the Kashmir Valley, the scene of a devastating earthquake two months ago.

The quake was epicentred at 36.8 degree North latitude and 70.7 degree East longitude, the Meteorological department said here.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was a magnitude 6.7 and was centred in the Hindukush region of northeastern Afghanistan.

An official at the Peshawar earthquake centre was quoted by AP as saying the quake "must be" about magnitude 6.5 and struck shortly before 3 am local time.

Officials Puzzled by Oklahoma Gas Geysers

Kingfisher, Oklahoma -- An outbreak of geysers spewing mud and gas into the air in rural Kingfisher County is puzzling state and local officials.

Kingfisher Fire Chief John Crawford says initial reports of the geysers came in Friday morning, and that firefighters and Oklahoma Corporation Commission officials were on the scene yesterday.

The geysers have appeared throughout the countryside of rural Kingfisher, with stretches of up to 12 miles between spots, and some as short as a quarter of a mile.

Crawford says the threat of the gas igniting is unlikely, but he says there is a concern the gas could begin coming up through water-well lines.

Comment: Like we have been saying, something strange is going on in our planet's interior...

New ocean basin forming in African desert

Ethiopian, American and European researchers have observed a fissure in a desert in the remote northeast of Ethiopia that could be the "birth of a new ocean basin", scientists said.

Researchers from Britain, France, Italy and the US have been observing the 37-mile-long fissure since it split open in September in the Afar desert. "They estimate it will take a million years to fully form into an ocean," said Dereje Ayalew, who leads the team of 18 scientists studying the phenomenon.

"The fissure, now 13 feet wide, formed in just three weeks after a September 14 earthquake in a barren region called Boina, 621 miles north east of the capital, Addis Ababa," said Dereje yesterday.

"We believe we have seen the birth of a new ocean basin," said Dereje of Addis Ababa University. "This is unprecedented in scientific history because we usually see the split after it has happened. But here we are watching the phenomenon."

Kashmiri Quake victims face second wave of death in the snow

Still reeling from the devastating earthquake in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, miserable survivors huddle in crowded quarters, preparing for the onset of a Himalayan winter. In some Kashmiri villages, a new calamity is unfolding, with nearly half of them suffering skin diseases, respiratory problems or other cold-related illnesses, health officials say.

Two months after the 7.6 magnitude tremor destroyed their world, a second wave of death is expected to scythe through vulnerable communities in the mountains. "Scabies, flu and respiratory-tract problems are common," said Irshad Hussain, a doctor at a field hospital in Ghari Dopata, 20 miles south-east of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-ruled Kashmir.

Some 700 cases of scabies have been treated in his clinic, close to the epicentre of the quake that killed 87,000 people and left nearly three million homeless. About 200 people suffered from colds but only a few had contacted pneumonia. Measles vaccinations are still a priority.

Clinton warns of climate peril, demands US switch out of fossil fuels

Montreal - Former US president Bill Clinton took to the podium at the UN climate talks here to ram home a grim message about global warming and demand the United States move quickly away from the fossil fuels causing the problem.

In a show-stealing appearance rumoured to have ired the US delegation, Clinton defended the UN's Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gases that was ditched by his successor, President George W. Bush, and said the switch to cleaner energy would create millions of jobs for the American economy.

"There's no longer any serious doubt that climate change is real, accelerating, and caused by human activities," Clinton said.
